CHIRP user guide
CHIRP sends your phone an alert when a Biola game, match or meet starts, and another with the final score and Biola's top performers. You pick the sports. There is no account and no password.
Set it up (2 minutes)
iPhone or iPad (alerts only work from the Home Screen app):
- Open chirp.eagle-shift.com in Safari.
- Tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen, then Add.
- Open CHIRP from your Home Screen (the red and blue bullhorn icon).
- Tap the sports you want, then Turn on alerts, then Allow.
- Tap Send a test alert. It should arrive within a few seconds.
Android or a computer: open chirp.eagle-shift.com in Chrome (or Edge or Firefox), pick sports, tap Turn on alerts, allow notifications, and send a test. Adding it to your home screen is optional.
Open CHIRPWhat the alerts look like
Tap a start alert for live stats; tap a final for the box score or recap. A cancellation or postponement posted on the schedule is sent once too.
Follow a game
For any game CHIRP can read live (home games, road games at schools using SIDEARM live stats, and water polo), tap Follow under it in the list and choose any of:
- Every run or every goal (baseball, softball, soccer, water polo)
- Lead changes and ties
- End of each inning, set, half or quarter
- A score update every 10, 20 or 30 minutes
Following a game also sends you its start and final, even if that sport is not one of your picks. If several things happen in the same minute you get one alert, and each update replaces the last on your lock screen. A device can follow 12 games at a time; a follow ends a day after the game.
Where the alerts come from
CHIRP checks every minute, with no person in the loop and no AI. It reads only public pages:
| Sports | Start | Final |
|---|---|---|
| Volleyball, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball at home | When Biola's live stats show the game has begun | The moment live stats go final, with the score and top performers |
| The same sports on the road at a school using SIDEARM live stats | When the host school's own live stats show the game has begun | The moment the host's live stats go final, with top performers |
| The same sports on the road at a school using StatBroadcast (or NCAA.com) | At the scheduled time | When the result is posted on athletics.biola.edu (performers once the box score is posted) |
| Water polo | When The FOSH shows the game live | When The FOSH goes final, with goals and saves |
| Cross country, track & field | At the scheduled time | When the result is posted on athletics.biola.edu; Biola's top finishers come from the meet's trackscoreboard results when it uses them |
| Swimming & diving, tennis | At the scheduled time | When the result is posted on athletics.biola.edu (team result only; their results sites cannot be read automatically) |
The schedule is re-read every few minutes on game days, so live links posted late, even on the day, are picked up.
Coverage check
At the bottom of the app, each upcoming event shows whether CHIRP is ready for it. Before every event, CHIRP opens its live link and tests that kind of feed on a recent finished event, to prove it can read the start, the final and the top performers. StatBroadcast links that only point at a school's whole schedule are matched to the one game.
Ready Live start and final, with performers where the sport has them.
Website result only Start at the scheduled time; final when the website posts it.
Needs a look The test failed. Tap the row for what it found, and tell Neil.
No live link yet Nothing posted on the schedule yet; it is checked again as soon as one appears.
Good to know
- Change your sports any time. Your alerts follow your picks, and so does the list in the app.
- Turn off with the same button, or block notifications for the site or app in your phone's settings.
- Nothing personal is stored: just your device's push address and the sports you picked.
- Not arriving? Open CHIRP and tap Send a test alert. On iPhone, make sure you opened CHIRP from the Home Screen icon, not a Safari tab, and that Focus or Do Not Disturb is not holding it.
- Questions or a wording change? Email Neil Morgan.
